One of the best kept secrets in Miami is not a secret within the music community of this area. The sanctuary of our congregation is one of the finest music venues in the county. Some of the best jazz and classical musicians have played our acoustically fine hall over the years, including jazz great Ira Sullivan and the classical guitarist Juan Mercadal. This year’s series will provide another mixed bag of great listening.

Sunday, September 26, 4PM: Paul Green’s Klezmer East

Paul Green: clarinet, Bob Weiner: keyboard/arranger, Seth Merlin: trumpet, Roy Fantel: drums

Klezmer East is dedicated to performing both traditional Klezmer classics from Europe and more contemporary Jewish pieces from the United States. The style reflects the extensive club date experience of the group's members.

Friday, October 8, 8PM: Jamie Ousley Trio with guest vocals by SAMM

Jamie Ousley: bass, Joe Davidian: piano, Austin McMahon: drums, SAMM: vocals

The Trio was formed in Miami in 2003 as an outgrowth of the prestigious University of Miami Concert Jazz Band. The trio members, each with a Master's degree in Jazz Performance, made an instant musical connection in their approach to playing standards and originals by performing regularly at various Miami venues. We welcome them back from their recent European tour.

A Little History of Lotz...

Our committee bears the name of John and Goldie Lotz, members of our choir in the ‘60s and ‘70s who were superb classical vocalists. They were dedicated to this congregation and to bringing us fine music. They sang German Leder, Hebrew, French, Spanish, Latin and Opera. John sang the Kol Nidre for us yearly, and both were guest artists at other houses of worship. When they died they left the profits from the sale of their home to be set aside as a way to enable us to hire professional musicians to enhance special Sunday services.

The original committee was formed by invitation of the minister. Over the years the committee has evolved as ministers retired, resigned, or died, and currently exists solely for the presentation of concerts. The Lotz Concert Committee has a well-known jazz history in the Miami-Dade community, which was nurtured by legendary Ira Sullivan during the early '70s. Our concerts have added to the Lotz Music Fund, enriching our congregation's musical life. We have also hosted fund-raising concerts for such jazz greats as drummer Steve Bagby, guitarist Simon Salz and singer Mel Dancy.

Additionally, we have been able to tap into the virtuosity available at the University of Miami, Miami-Dade College, and Florida International University, as well as the jazz giants who have retired to our area.

The current concert committee is composed of Carol Reiter, chair, Sally Vann Pyle, Beth Wiggert, Rosemary Timmony, Marvin/Rey Baumel, Andrea Mustelier, Marilyn Rutgers, Mary Gonzalez and Jeff Reiter.
