![]() 8/12/2007 Miami Herald Article Our congregation has been actively involved in protesting the Iraq war. In November of 2002 we called a special meeting to pass a resolution calling upon our government to use all means possible to seek a non-violent solution to the conflict in Iraq. Five years later, at our annual meeting, we passed another resolution asking our government to stop the military action and “pursue a constructive, compassionate alternative that facilitates peaceful coexistence”. A Peaceful Protest The Social Justice committee has decided to participate in the Toy Soldier Project that has been happening in other Unitarian Universalist congregations and elsewhere around the country. The idea is to take little plastic toy soldiers, attach a tag to them with the message “Bring Them Home” on one side and call your U.S. Senator on the other. Members of the congregation are distributing them all around the county, in stores and restaurants, salons and gas stations, libraries and parks-everywhere we go. ![]() More than seventy percent of our fellow citizens agree that this war was ill conceived, has been grossly mismanaged, and has severely damaged our image in the world community. We are taking a stand. Thousands of our young men and women are dying, not to mention many more thousands of Iraqi men, women, and children. Join us in this patriotic project aimed at a diplomatic solution in Iraq. Let’s end the global hostility, which our government has sought to solve by continual brute force. Let our voices be heard. If people lead, the leaders will follow. |
