The Rev. Wendy Pantoja

If you have had a conversation with me about religious education, you have probably heard me mention Sophia Lyon Fahs. She was an extraordinary woman who single-handedly revolutionized Unitarian religious education. A firm believer that children should not be exposed to the Bible until they were ready to study history, she wrote curricula that was child-centered and experiential, and that supported her goal: "We wish children to come to know God directly through original approaches of their own to the universe."  She was fifty years old when she enrolled in seminary so she could have “the same education ministers have, because I want to understand the things that they understood."

While there is no expectation that all adults should go and become ministers, her life decision attests to the important truth that religious education is not just for children. It is a matter of faith development for all ages. It is how members of a congregation become more knowledgeable and conversant about the values and beliefs that guide them through their daily lives as individuals and as members of whatever group in which they may find themselves. It is how we come to know the history of how our religious movement came to be and how we develop our identity as one of the tribe called Unitarian Universalists.

In our denomination, there are many resources to ensure that our faith development becomes a lifetime journey. While within our congregation we have kept a religious education program going for our children, we have not always done as well with adults of all ages. This year we have started again and your response has been astounding. Next year we will offer more classes. I hope many of you will contribute as learners and teachers toward making UUCM a center of Unitarian Universalist learning.

En paz y fe,
Rev. Wendypaz
