October 2012

The Rev. Wendy Pantoja

A new year has begun and in response to some of your comments, we are trying some new things in the Order of Service.  Besides putting a few service elements in a slightly different sequence, we are trying new wording for the welcome and offering.

We are also trying out a new unison affirmation which comes out of Singing the Living Tradition and Las voces del camino, current Unitarian Universalist hymnals. Many of you have welcomed the change and are navigating the Spanish words very well.  One or two of you have mentioned a little discomfort with some of the language.  Is it something left over from unresolved hurts with a previous religious affiliation?  Is it that the religious right has been too assertive in defining some of these words?

Here are a few things you may want to try:

  • Define these words in the most positive, expansive Unitarian Universalist light.
  • Participate in the after-service forum we will be having later this month on the topic of religious language.
  • Remember that this is a work in progress.  The tweaking has begun and will continue over the next few weeks.  If you have any suggestions, please email them to me so they can be discussed with the Worship Committee.

To find out more about how other Unitarian Universalists have defined religious language, I encourage you to read articles and sermons online as well as print material.  One book that has been invaluable to me is Heretics’ Faith: Vocabulary for Religious Liberals by the Reverend Frederic Muir, a Unitarian Universalist minister.

En paz y fe,
Rev. Wendypaz
