The Rev. Wendy Pantoja
A new year! A new beginning!
The start of a calendar year often gives us the opportunity to start over in at least one aspect of our lives. The mistake we tend to make is to attempt too many new beginnings at once. We try to address them all but are soon overwhelmed by the hectic busyness that takes over our lives once again.
The best thing to do is to keep our lists short—two or three things to which we will give a deeper level of attention. The first thing on our list should probably be to breathe—not in the same way our bodies do automatically day after day. This is the kind of breathing for which we have to be still. We breathe in deeply, feeling our lungs fill up with air and noticing our abdomen rise as the diaphragm expands. It is slow and purposeful, as if we want to savor every last molecule of it. Then just as intentionally, we let it out slowly, our diaphragm shrinking and our lungs feeling purified by the air they are letting out as we get ready for our next breath of fresh air. After having done this a few times, we may find that this pause was all we needed to draw new energy and perhaps think more clearly of a new plan that will allow us to accomplish what we want.
We have much to look forward to in the new year both in our personal lives and in our congregational life. Let us enjoy what we can and address the more serious things with serenity. Let us make peace with that which eludes us. Let us be grateful for the blessing we are to our loved ones, to the stranger, to ourselves.
Happy New Year! ¡Feliz Año Nuevo! Bonne année!
